Fix The Damn Roads

So our new Governor here in Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, has come up with a way to “fix the damn roads”. Let’s see how everyone likes it!

Her proposal is to add a 45 cent gasoline tax to each gallon of gas you buy. That goes on top of the taxes we are already paying here in Michigan per gallon of gas. If this proposal goes through, Michigan would have the highest gas taxes in the nation! We would be paying over $1 for each gallon of gas that we buy.

Let’s run some numbers…

The average gas tank is about 15 gallons. If you fill up your tank with that amount of gas, at an additional 45 cents per gallon — you would be paying an extra $6.75 at the pump. That’s EVERY time you fill up your tank.

How many times a week due you fill up your tank? I fill up 2-3 times, meaning it would now cost me $13-20 each week in additional costs for fuel.

Per year that number becomes $675-$1,040! And keep in mind that is just for ONE car. What about if you have 2, 3 or more cars in your family? Just keep multiplying that number!!!

Not only will you be paying at the pump, but you will be paying this tax indirectly in just about everything you buy. Any item that has to be trucked to the stores will increase in price. The trucking companies will also have to pay more for fuel…and they are just going to pass that cost down to the end user — YOU and ME!

The survey says…

This post is NOT a political post. I don’t care if the Governor is Democrat or Republican. I am just curious to find out how you feel about a few things. Take the survey below…

Are you in favor of an increased gas tax to pay to fix our roads?

Just think about the tourist that come here people won’t want to pay over $3.50 for gas to go to Michigan they’ll find other places to go to and boom there we go putting Michigan right down in that barrel again what is she thinking and sad thing is that when she was debating on C-Span in Grand Rapids on wood 8 she denied that she would increase straight out denied and what a crying shame it’s I guess the world needs people to lie to get what they want.

Are a single individual who commutes more than 100 miles per day to work, I simply can not afford that. I already don’t go places purposely because I have to watch my gas budget. Why not impose the tax on pot? I’d rather see sales tax go up a 1/2 percent vrs gas tax. I voted forGretchen but would NEVER have had I known this was her plan.

How about using the gas taxes we already pay towards fixing the roads. If it isn’t enough, take the money from somewhere else less important, like funds for a study on why birds fly south for the Winter, or if blue-eyed people see differently than brown-eyed people.

I live very modestly as a single. My yearly income is well under 50k. Wondering how much each of our Michigan politicians earn per year? My point is the increases won’t really adversely affect them. Also our food prices for example went up the last time fuel was out of sight…still waiting for these prices to come back down due to lower fuel prices.

The increase will be more than just what you put in your tank. Every business that uses gas will need to increase their charges to cover the increase in gas tax. This could add up to thousands of dollars.

I thought that’s what the legalization of marijuana was for! So what is she going to do with all the tax money from the sell of pot? I don’t think she even remembers that tax money will be coming in! She should open the dispensaries and see how much tax money will be coming in!!!!!!!!!!! If we have to pay 45 cents more per gallon we will be paying more then California does for gas! This is just a BAD BAD move!!!!!!!!!!!!

My solution is doing what I currently do, I work in Indiana and gas there is currently at $2.25 a gallon while it is at $2.57 a gallon. I will just by my gas in Indiana.

When Michigan voted for a 1% sales tax increase several years ago for the roads, other line items were added so that the roads did not receive the whole tax increase. Reintroduce the 1% tax increase with all of it going to the roads. With a 45 cents/gallon increase how many people will now visit Michigan and how many Michaganders will limit their trips throughout the state? It’s a bad idea period.

It’s time Michigander faced up to the fact that the roads just plain suck. Not just the freeways but the secondary and other roads as well. When I drove Michigan roads daily ( I live in Florida now ) I watched as the roads I used every day fell apart. State residents allowed to happen too by re electing the politicians who ignored what was happening, and did not have the courage to speak out against it. Now is it time to “pay the piper” Congrats to the governor for having the courage to say what every one knows is the truth.

I know that in Florida we don’t have trouble with snow and ice and frost, but the damn thing is, we have outstanding roads, any road that needs the slightest improvement, gets it right away, and we don’t have a state income tax. Both Florida and Michigan have a 6% sales tax.
