July 5, 1937: Spam® introduced

On July 5, 1937, the luncheon meat Spam® was introduced into the market by the Hormel Foods Corporation. According to the Spam® page on Wikipedia.org, “By 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries on six continents and trademarked in over 100 countries.” Over 8 billion cans of Spam® have been sold. There are 12.8 cans of Spam® products eaten every second.

Growing up my Mother would make Spam® for dinner on occasion. She would take the meat from the can, slice it, and then fry it up.

It’s hard to believe that from the one original flavor, they now have 20 different varieties. It’s been a long time since I’ve shopped for Spam®, so I’m not sure how many of those varieties are actually available on the store shelves — Interesting flavors like Hot and Spicy, Teriyaki, or Garlic.

And, if you ever happen to be traveling through Minnesota, there is actually a Spam® Museum as well! It is located south of Minneapolis — in Austin, MN. I’ve never been to the museum, but you better believe if I’m in the area — I’m stopping!

On their official website, there are numerous recipes as well. (I wish the internet had existed in the 70s…Mom might have been able to try something other than just fried Spam®!) I have to admit, some of the recipes look pretty good. I may have to go buy a can or two and try out some of these dishes. I really am intrigued by the Spam® Fries!

Happy Anniversary Spam®! I’m off to the grocery store… I’m trying Spam® fries by the end of the day!

I have a spam shirt that I have worn on 6 continents over the last 2 decades. Most recently I wore it while in Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
