The Palace to be Imploded This Weekend, New Beer To Try, Masks Yes – Deodorant No, Mac & Cheese on Tap

“Random Thoughts” for Wednesday, July 8th 2020

It’s HUMP DAY! We’ve made it through almost half of the week. Are you keeping cool? Here are my “Random Thoughts” for Wednesday…

THE PALACE OF AUBURN HILLS TO BE IMPLODED ON SUNDAY

The history of The Palace of Auburn Hills will come to an end on Sunday, July 12th, 2020 at 8 am.. Eight hundred pounds of dynamite will reduce the building to a pile of rubble.

The 22,000-seat arena opened on August 13th, 1988, with a Sting concert. It closed its doors on September 23rd, 2017 after a Bob Seger performance.

In those 29 years, The Palace hosted many concerts and sporting events.

You can read more about this weekend’s implosion here.

The last time a retired sporting arena was imploded things didn’t go so well. On Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 the Pontiac Silverdome was to be imploded. People gathered to watch the former home of the Detroit Lions come tumbling to the ground. The dynamite was detonated, the boom was heard…and then nothing.

It wasn’t until the next day, after more explosives were added to the structure, that the building finally came down.

NEW BREWS THIS SUMMER

Bell's Mango Oberon

I love craft beer. I really like trying the new brews that local breweries come up with. Now I have a few new ones to try…

First, Bells is releasing a Mango Oberon. On their Facebook page, the company posted “Summer is about to get a mango twist!” No additional details were made available.

It was also announced that Brewery Vivant and John Ball Zoo have teamed up to create a new zoo brew called simply JBZ. The new beer is being released Thursday on draft at John Ball Zoo and at Brewery Vivant. The beer will later be packaged in 16-ounce cans for takeout at both locations later this summer. Vivant Brewery Creative Director Jon Ward describes the new beer as being “a crisp and easy-drinking summer beer with aromas of swaying pine trees, pineapple and refreshing citrus.” Profits from the new brew will be donated to water conservation and sustainability efforts.

You can join John Ball Zoo and Brewery Vivant for the official tapping of JBZ on Thursday, July 9th at 10:00 a.m. The event will be at John Ball Zoo’s Monkey Bar, located next to Monkey Island Café Attendees (ages 21+) can also enjoy a tasting of the new beer. Mention at the JBZ gate that you are here for the tasting and you will be given entrance to attend the tasting.

And last but certainly not least, New Holland Brewery has announced a new Dragon’s Milk. It’s called Dragon’s Milk Solera and is described as a “Foeder-aged ale with rich notes of caramel, toffee, and fig.” (A foeder is a massive oak barrel.) The beer will be available year-round beginning in August in select markets.

It looks like I have some beer drinking to do in the coming weeks!

FORCING MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING

The public transportation commission in Berlin has come up with a unique way to get people to wear masks on the city’s trains and buses. They are requiring masks, while banning deodorant. That’s right. You have to wear a mask, but don’t wear any deodorant.

They hope this initiative will make public transportation as stinky as possible, which in turn will make wearing a mask and keeping your distance from others a necessity!

MAC AND CHEESE ON TAP

In order to celebrate National Mac and Cheese Day, which is coming up next Tuesday, July 14th, the food company Stouffer’s has created a special Mac & Cheese dispenser.

You pull the lever — and mac and cheese comes out. It’s Mac & Cheese on tap!

I want one of these things!

TODAY IS…

Today is Chocolate with Almonds Day!

I think I’m stopping to get a Hershey’s Chocolate with Almonds candy bar on the way into work. Better yet, is anyone selling the World Famous Chocolate Bars right now? Those are the best!

A LOOK BACK

On this date in 1889, the last bare-knuckle fight championship took place on this date. John L. Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in 75 rounds (yes, 75!).

I can’t even imagine taking a punch to the face with a boxing glove, let along a bare-knuckle fight.

Find out what else has happened on July 8th.
