What I Did on Spring Break (Or: How I Tried to Bring Warm Weather Home and Failed)

Several people have asked what I did on my spring break vacation.

So instead of answering one person at a time, I figured I’d just lay it all out here—because it turns out, it was a pretty packed week.

This wasn’t your typical “sit by the pool and do nothing” kind of trip. Oh no. This was more of a “how many random, interesting, and slightly bizarre stops can we cram into one week?” kind of adventure.

Let’s start with the highlights.

I put a coat of paint on the World’s Largest Ball of Paint. Yes, that’s a real thing. And yes, I now feel personally responsible for preserving a piece of American roadside history.

I slept in a Tee Pee. Because at some point in life, you should be able to say, “Yeah, I’ve done that.”

I visited the Salvador Dalí Museum, which was exactly as surreal as you’d expect. You walk in thinking you understand art… and you leave questioning everything, including clocks.

I saw manatees — basically the most relaxed creatures on Earth. If there’s ever an animal that truly understands vacation mode, it’s them.

I sat on the beach. Not enough, but enough to remember what warm sunshine feels like. At one point, I genuinely forgot what it was like to not wear three layers.

I explored a ghost town, which is always a fun reminder that at one time, people thought, “Yes, this is the place. Let’s build everything here.” And now… not so much.

I saw a rocket launch. I watched the Apollo missions on TV back in the 60s, but it was cool to actually see Artemis II go up decades later. It makes you feel like humanity is doing something pretty incredible.

I stopped at the Unclaimed Baggage Store, which is basically a treasure hunt mixed with confusion. You never know what you’ll find—but you’ll definitely wonder how someone forgot it.

Of course, I made the required pilgrimage to Buc-ee’s, where the snacks are endless, the bathrooms are legendary, and you somehow leave with things you didn’t know you needed.

And I wrapped it all up with a visit to the Lane Auto Museum, which is full of cars that make you say, “Wait… that’s a real vehicle?”

(More on some of these stops in the coming weeks — including pictures!)

Somewhere in between all that, there were plenty of miles, random stops, and moments where we just said, “Well, since we’re here…”

It was a busy week.

A really busy week.

And now… I’m glad to be back.

I did try to bring the warm weather home with me. I really did. But somewhere around Louisville, Tennessee… it slipped away. Probably headed back to Florida without me.

So if you’re wondering why it’s cold again…

I tried. 😄
