1715 – Sybilla Thomas Masters became the first American to be granted a patent for cleaning and curing Indian corn.
1867 – Alfred Nobel patented dynamite.
1884 – J.B. Meyenberg received the patent for evaporated milk.
1951 – Steam power ended on the Pere Marquette Railroad as the last active “Berkshire” engine was sent to Grand Rapids, MI to be decommissioned.
1955 – The Interstate Commerce Commission banned racial segregation on interstate trains and buses.
1957 – President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a stroke.
1963 – President John F. Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
1984 – Band Aid’s charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, written by Bob Geldof and Ultravox singer Midge Ure, was recorded at Notting Hill studio in London. Thirty-six artists participated in the fundraiser, which aided Ethiopian famine relief and lead to Live Aid in July 1985.
1986 – President Ronald Reagan and Attorney Gen. Edwin Meese revealed that profits from secret arms sales to Iran had been diverted to rebels in Nicaragua. National Security Advisor John Poindexter resigned and Oliver North was fired.
1992 – The movie “The Bodyguard” was released in theaters.
1992 – Disney’s animated movie “Sinbad” debuted in theaters.
1996 – Disney ended their nighttime parade, The Main Street Electric Parade, after a 24 year run.
1999 – Elian Gonzales, a young Cuban boy who became the subject of a furious legal battle, was rescued by fisherman while floating in an inner tube off the coast of Florida.
2008 – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened a New York annex, focused on artists from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
2018 – The Camp Fire, in northern California, was finally contained after it destroyed 18,793 structures and killed 88 people.
