I don’t know exactly when it happened… but somewhere along the way, things just got more complicated.
Now, before this turns into a full-on “back in my day” speech, let me be clear — I like technology. I like convenience. I like not having to print out MapQuest directions and hope for the best.
But still… there are a few things that just felt easier 20 years ago.
Or at least, that’s how I remember it.
📺 TVs Had About 5 Buttons — and That Was Enough
You had power, volume, channel up, channel down… maybe an input button if you were living fancy.
That was it.
Now? You need:
- Three remotes
- A Wi-Fi connection
- An app update
- And possibly a minor degree in systems engineering just to watch the news
And heaven help you if you hit the wrong input.
🔐 Passwords Didn’t Require a Strategy Meeting
Your password used to be something like:
👉 “tigers123”
Done.
Now?
- One uppercase
- One lowercase
- A symbol
- A number
- Your childhood pet’s nickname
- And the name of your third-grade teacher’s favorite snack
And you can’t reuse anything from the last 37 passwords.
At this point, logging in feels like applying for a security clearance.
📞 Phones Were Just… Phones
You picked it up.
You dialed a number.
Someone answered.
End of transaction.
Now your phone:
- Tracks your steps
- Listens for commands
- Sends notifications you didn’t ask for
- And somehow still autocorrects your text into something embarrassing
I miss the days when a phone didn’t know more about me than I know about myself.
🗺️ Getting Lost Was Just Part of the Plan
You didn’t panic if you missed a turn.
You just… figured it out.
Pulled over. Looked at a map. Maybe stopped at a gas station and asked someone for directions.
Now?
You miss one turn and your GPS sounds personally offended.
“Recalculating…”
Yeah, I know. I messed up. You don’t have to say it like that.
📦 You Didn’t Need 12 Apps to Do One Thing
Want to watch something? Turn on the TV.
Want food? Go get it.
Want to talk to someone? Call them.
Now everything requires:
- An app
- An account
- A login
- A verification code
- And a follow-up email you didn’t want
It’s like nothing can just… be simple anymore.
🛠️ Things Were Allowed to Be… Basic
Not everything needed to be “smart.”
Your thermostat didn’t judge you.
Your fridge didn’t connect to Wi-Fi.
Your doorbell didn’t record your every move.
Now everything is “smart,” except for the moments when it decides to stop working entirely.
🤔 Or Maybe It’s Just Us…
Let’s be honest — there’s a chance things aren’t actually harder.
There’s a chance we just have:
- More responsibilities
- More things to keep track of
- And less patience than we used to
But still… it really feels like things used to be simpler.
Final Thoughts
I wouldn’t trade today’s conveniences.
I like GPS. I like streaming. I like being able to look up anything instantly.
But every once in a while, it’s nice to think back to a time when:
- TVs had five buttons
- Passwords were easy
- And phones just… made calls
Life might not have actually been easier…
But it definitely felt like it.
