TODAY IN HISTORY:

1838 – Samuel Morse demonstrated the telegraph for the first time.

1912 – New Mexico became the 47th state.

1930 – The first diesel-engine automobile trip was completed after a run from Indianapolis, IN, to New York City, NY. A total of 792 miles.

1931 – Thomas Edison submitted his last patent application.

1942 – Pan American Airlines made the first commercial around-the-world airline flight.

1945 – George Herbert Walker Bush married Barbara Pierce in Rye, NY.

1945 – Looney Tunes introduced us to the loveable but stinky skunk, Pepe Le Pew.

1952 – The “Peanuts” comic strip debuted in Sunday papers across the United States.

1958 – Gibson patented its Flying V electric guitar.

1963 – The television nature series “Wild Kingdom” premiered on NBC.

1973 – “Schoolhouse Rock” made it’s debut on Saturday morning ABC TV. The series ran off and on until 2003.

1974 – In response to the 1973 oil crisis, daylight saving time began nearly four months early in the United States.

1975 – The television game show “Wheel of Fortune” debuted on NBC.

1975 – ABC debuted the television morning show “A.M. America”, It would later become “Good Morning America”.

1987 – Elton John underwent exploratory throat surgery in Australia after suffering voice problems for more than a year. Doctors found a benign lesion on his vocal cords.

1994 – Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed on the right leg by an assailant at Cobo Arena in Detroit, MI. Four men were later sentenced to prison for the attack, including Tonya Harding’s ex-husband.

1998 – The spacecraft Lunar Prospect was launched into orbit around the moon. The craft was crashed into the moon, in an effort to find water under the lunar surface, on July 31, 1999.

1999 – The 106th U.S. Congress opened. The first item on the agenda was the impeachment proceedings of President Bill Clinton. The trial was set to begin January 7, 1999.

1999 – Bob Newhart received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2001 – The TV show “How It’s Made” premiered on the Discovery Channel in Canada and the Science Channel in the United States.

2001 – Congress certified George W. Bush the winner of the 2000 election.

2004 – Celine Dion received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2004 – Jury selection began in Martha Stewart’s trial.

2021 – Americans stormed the United States Capitol Building to disrupt certification of the 2020 presidential election, resulting in four deaths and evacuation of the U.S. Congress.

2025 – Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Prime Minister of Canada after 9 years in office.
