I Slept in a Tee Pee (And It Was Way Cooler Than You Think)

Entrance to Wig Wam Village

Every once in a while on a road trip, you get the chance to stay somewhere that’s more than just a place to sleep.

This was one of those places.

On my recent trip to Florida, I spent the night at Wigwam Village #2 in Cave City, Kentucky — and let me just say… this was not your standard hotel experience.

Not Your Average Hotel Room

Instead of pulling up to a long hallway of identical doors, you pull up to something that looks like it belongs on Route 66 in the 1940s.

Because, well… it kind of does.

Each “room” is actually its own standalone structure shaped like a teepee. You park right outside your door, walk in, and suddenly you’re stepping into a piece of roadside history.

It’s one of those places where you immediately think, “Yep… this is why road trips are still better than flying.”

Wigwam… or Teepee?

Now here’s a fun little twist.

Even though it’s called Wigwam Village, what you’re actually staying in looks much more like a teepee.

And that’s because… it is.

A traditional wigwam is a completely different style of structure. But the original owner thought “Wigwam Village” had a better ring to it than “Teepee Village” — and honestly, he was probably right. It does roll off the tongue a little better.

Still, it’s one of those quirky little details that makes the whole experience even more interesting.

A Stop Along the Historic Dixie Highway

What makes this place even cooler is where it’s located.

Wigwam Village sits along the historic Dixie Highway, which was once one of the main routes people took when traveling north to south — from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Miami, Florida. It was the I-75 of the early 1900’s.

Before interstates took over, this was the road. Families would pile into their cars, map in hand, and head south for sunshine — stopping at places exactly like this along the way.

So staying here isn’t just about the novelty of the wigwam… it’s about experiencing a small piece of what road travel used to feel like.

So… What’s It Actually Like Inside?

I know what you’re thinking.

“Okay, it looks cool… but what about the inside?”

Surprisingly comfortable.

It’s not luxury resort living, but it’s clean, cozy, and exactly what you need after a long day on the road. Think simple, functional, and just enough charm to remind you that you’re somewhere unique. It had heat/AC, a TV, and everything you need after a long drive. It was furnished with some of the original furniture and also has it’s own private bathroom and shower, and internet accessibility.

Also, there’s something oddly satisfying about saying: “I’m going to sleep in a tee pee tonight.”

The Vibe

There’s a certain vibe to places like this that you just don’t get anywhere else.

It’s quiet.
It’s a little nostalgic.
It feels like stepping back in time — but in a good way.

You can almost picture travelers from decades ago pulling in for the night after a long drive down the Dixie Highway, calling it a day before heading farther south in the morning.

Why Stops Like This Matter

This is exactly why I love road trips.

Sure, you can get from point A to point B faster by flying. But you miss everything in between.

And sometimes, “everything in between” includes sleeping in a wigwam (that’s actually a teepee) along a historic highway in Kentucky.

That’s not something you forget.

Final Thoughts

Was it the fanciest place I’ve ever stayed? No.

Was it one of the most memorable? Absolutely!

If you’re ever passing through Cave City, Kentucky, I highly recommend making the stop.

Because sometimes the best part of a road trip… is realizing you just slept in a tee pee along a historic highway in Kentucky — and somehow, that makes perfect sense.

(This isn’t the first tee pee that I have slept in. The first one was a lot more rustic. It did not have running water and there was also so private toilet and shower inside the tee pee! You can read more about my first tee pee stay here.)
